“White Flag” - The New Rock Complexity

New York avante-rock ensembles Electric Kompany & Newspeak played to a packed house at the Community Education Center in West Philly on Sat. night in a program featuring an eclectic mix off sultry ballades and heavy hitting shredders. Both ensembles presented a striking collection of new music relevant to the times in which we live.

Coupled with thier rock n’ roll edge were intense political commentaries such as David T. Little’s “love song” to fossil fuel Sweet Light Crude (Newspeak) and the intensely powerful anti-war statement made by JacobTV’s White Flag (Electric Kompany). This performance, the first to utilize a video projection comprised of images from the media sources used for White Flag, presented one of the most compelling and highly successful politically motivated works of art we’ve seen in recent years.

This thread of social commentary was further enhanced by visual artist Daniel Heyman’s stunning full wall installation from his Abu Ghraib Prisoner Project and the surprise encore from Newspeak, Black Sabbath’s War Pigs, which felt as relevant now as it ever has.

This concert was certainly one of a kind, if you were there to join us we would love to here you thoughts and openly invite discussion. Please post your comments!

If you miss out on the season opener, be sure to catch our next show “De Profundis” on Feb. 16th. Don’t forget to sign up on the CMN! mailing list in order to receive concert announcements and updates.
