Engawa is Japanese for "porch," and while that might not seem like the most exciting source of inspiration upon first consideration, the term is much more complex then one might think. CMN has teamed up with Fairmount Park's Shofuso Japanese House and Garden to utilize this concept through new musical compositions by three Philadelphia based composers. Initially explored by internationally-acclaimed Nihon-ga painter, Hiroshi Senju, one of Japan’s most revered contemporary artists in a mural displayed at the home, "engawa" explores the contrast bewteen outdoor and indoor spaces and how nature can be brought into the home. The performance at the Shofuso House will take place on the garden deck overlooking the koi pond, space is limited for this presentation so order early guarantee a seat.
