KYW 1060 - April 25, 2009

"Cellblock opens at Eastern State Penitentiary" by KYW's Jim Melwert

Eastern State Penitentiary was the setting for a new musical production of original works from the organization "Chamber Music Now". The concert was called "Cellblock" and it featured music ispired by the abandoned Philadelphia landmark.

The music alone was moving, but hearing it performed in the darkness with the crumbling walls of Eastern State Penitentiary closing in on you took it to another level.

Chamber Music Now Executive Director Richard Belcastro said the four composers each used the penitentiary as motivation for their musical pieces in very different ways:

"It's the coolest space. It's not your typical venue but it sounds incredible, and it's the ideal setting for something like this, to really hear a peice of art inside the source of its inspiration."

The performances feature four different pieces. "Cellblock" was also scheduled for April 25th, May 1st, and May 3rd.
